You know what’s crazy?

For 10 years of legal practice I lived in fear of the legal ethics board. I generally thought it was illegal to compensate anyone for a referral that they sent to Holt Law.

Not the case…..

Per the ethics rules, the lawyers board provides a very lawyerly answer:

It permits Holt Law to give nominal gifts as an expression of appreciation to a person for recommending the lawyer’s services or referring a prospective client.

*The gift may not be more than a token item as might be given for holidays, or other ordinary social hospitality.

Now that the legalese is out of the way…

I don’t expect any referrals from you. But you can expect my “nominal” gift as an expression of my appreciation for your referral.

Let me know who you are if you send us referrals and we will take care of you in a completely legal and ethical way per the rules above. You can print this and send it to the lawyers board.

Of course, a gift is prohibited if offered or given in consideration of any promise, agreement or understanding that such a gift would be forthcoming or that referrals would be made or encouraged in the future.

I have no expectation of you referrals but I deeply appreciate them. Call me if you have questions about this and we can chat!
